Week 5 23/02/2021 ISSUE: 3

Catholic Education South Australia

From the Principal

Welcome to Week 5. We are now officially on the Lenten journey which is 40 days of preparation for the most important event in the Catholic Church calendar, the Easter Story. On Wednesday last week, children and families throughout the school were involved in a Mass or liturgy to celebrate the beginning of Lent and make a commitment to what they were going to do to support others in this time of giving up, and making a commitment to doing something for others. As a school and as a family we can support Project Compassion which does provide financial support for those in countries around the world, less fortunate than us. However, Lent should also be about doing something extra or making a commitment to support others in a way that you may not ordinarily consider, to make someone’s life a bit better. Have you thought about this? It might be a way to share in a wonderful learning experience with your child/ren, doing something that may help others in need over these next few weeks.

Childrens’ University

Something also worth considering for your child this year is the Children’s University program offered through Adelaide Uni. Children's University Adelaide fosters wellbeing by promoting 'free range learning', encouraging children to try out new activities, discover new passions, visit new places and above all, have fun! Please take the time to have a look through the website, (see link) and determine whether this might be a great learning opportunity for your child. It is a great way for children to explore their passions, learn some new skills and be recognised with a University style graduation ceremony to celebrate your achievements. Please consider!

In Partnership

One of the great things about working in a parish/school setting is the partnership that develops between members of the wider community. We are very blessed here at St Francis to have a strong connection with our parish, through our parish priests and the regular parishioners. Although there are boundaries between the school and Church grounds it is very much a mutually shared space. We are very grateful for the opportunity to use the Church carpark in the morning and afternoon for pick-ups and drop-offs. I remind our families that this is a privilege, not our right as the support of the parish really helps traffic flow in the morning and afternoon. It is the responsibility of every single parent and caregiver to follow the rules and signage re parking. Your cooperation with this is critical for the safety of our children and will ensure that we are able to continue to use this space.

Learning is Fun!

We had a great turn-out of parents this morning for our Mathematics workshop, the first of a series that will occur across the year. Lisa-Jane O’Connor from the Primary Mathematics Association delivered a fun and engaging session, aimed at developing understandings of how to make mathematics come alive for your child. If you missed out today I encourage you to keep an eye out for the next session in March and book early to get a seat. The parents who have attended these sessions love them and I’m sure if you come to one you’ll be very likely to come back. Make sure you check out our Facebook page to see just how much fun it was.

Have a great week.

From the Aprim

I am so overwhelmed by the warm welcome I have received from the St Francis of Assisi Community. From day one I realised that this school is the place for me and I am so excited to be part of the St Francis Family. Thank you to the students and families that have made the effort to come and chat to me and help me settle in. My goal is to learn all of the students names by the end of the year!

Last week our community embarked on our Lenten Journey with an Ash Wednesday Mass and Liturgy. The students reflected on how we spend the forty days of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus. Lent is a special time for growing and changing as we get ready for Easter. It is a time when we try hard to be good, to help others, to be sorry when we hurt others and try to forgive as God forgives us. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and giving to others. When we pray, we come closer to God so that we are better able to realise our baptismal promise to live justly as Jesus teaches us. Fasting helps us remember the needs of the poor, who often have no choice but to go without basic needs such as food, water and shelter. Giving to the poor, or ‘almsgiving’, is a sign of our commitment to justice. It reminds us of our blessings and allows us to give thanks for all that God has given us.

You may have noticed our new signage on the balcony which is our Vision statement at St Francis.

“Empowered by Hope, Inspired by Curiosity”

To have hope is to believe in good and know that God is always with us. We are empowered throughout faith in Jesus and each other. As a community we are inspired to seek truth and show love. To be curious is to always be open to learning new things and to trust in God’s guidance.

Your children would have brought home Project Compassion boxes during the week. This year Project Compassion’s Lenten Appeal theme is to “Be More”.

“Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” – Saint Oscar Romero

We have spoken to the children about what it means to be more to others this Lent, to be more to God and to be more for themselves. I am so delighted to already see some class Project Compassion boxes filling up. The generosity of the SFOA community is much appreciated by Caritas.

I am currently in the process of gathering Wellbeing Leaders for 2021 to work on some Wellbeing initiatives this year. It is important for students to have a voice in our school and for us to nurture the gifts of our children and their leadership skills and aspirations.

Thankyou again for the warm welcome to SFOA and I look forward to meeting many more of you in the coming weeks.

God Bless
