Catholic Education South Australia

From the Principal

Welcome to Week 9. A lot has happened in the last two weeks! In the face of all that we are experiencing as we journey the COVID-19 pandemic across the world, our schools remain such positive and calm spaces for our children and that is reflected in the daily life at St Francis at the moment. For those children at school, the learning continues as per normal. For those who are not we are in a new time as we work out ways to provide a comprehensive and practical remote learning program to give all our students on-going learning experiences in their absence.

Our staff are in the process of developing the home learning opportunities for our children. We realise for those of you choosing to keep your children home that keeping them busy is important. Equally, we want to make sure that the ‘busy’ work is also valuable learning and this will take a little time to work through. We are confident though as we move forward that we will be in a position to offer some quality on-line learning for students via the SeeSaw page for R-3 classes and Microsoft Teams for Years 4-6 classes. This process will take a little while to develop and we will have to make some adjustments as we roll out these resources. Please be patient and aware of the fact that this is a new process for our school and there will be some trial and error as we move forward.

Please note that bookings for Parent/Teacher interviews will proceed, but via phone only. There will be no face to face meetings at school this week. Teachers will call you at or near to you appointed time to have a phone conversation. We will need to keep to given times to ensure there is not a long wait for any parent and we ask that you are ready to take the call and have accessed a quiet space to have the conversation.

There are so many questions around COVID-19 and no doubt you have seen and heard so much media discussion around the subject, often with some conflicting or confusing messages for families. So what does it all mean for your child today here at St Francis?

Some FAQ’s

Q. Will remote learning be provided by the school?

A. Yes, we are working through this process and your child will have access soon

Q. Will schools remain open?

A. At this time we are guided by the Government and Catholic Education SA. Schools will remain open until further notice.

Q. Will the school holidays be extended?

A.  There is no intent at this time to extend the school holidays.

Q. Should my child be at home if they are unwell in any way?

A. Yes, we all have a responsibility to ensure that only those who are well are at school.

Q. What can I do to keep my child safe while they are at school?

A. Stay calm, keep positive and reinforce hygiene procedures. Our classrooms are happy places and children do love the daily routine of school life and the normality of being at school.

NAPLAN CANCELLED IN 2020

Last week it was announced that the NAPLAN tests that were scheduled for May this year have been cancelled due to the widespread disruption to schools and communities caused by COVID-19.

How to respond to children and young people when talking about Coronavirus:

Dealing with Coronavirus is tough for everyone – kids, young people and adults – from all walks of life.  For children with “big feelings” and challenges, it can be even harder.

A Faith Response to COVID-19

Over the last week I have received over 50 emails relating to COVID-19 in the form of information, correspondence from the Catholic Education Office, cancelled meetings/events and so on.  Who can relate?  Amongst the many emails I noticed a free weekly Parables ENews from GPBS (online resources for Catholic communities) based in NSW.  I downloaded the article to share with you and invite you to make a tea or coffee and give yourself 10 minutes to read how in faith, we can move forward during this stage of uncertainty.  The article breaks open, “Don’t be afraid, just believe” Mark 5:36 into 4 areas – Enough for Everyone, Protect the Vulnerable, A Spirit of sacrifice and Loving our Neighbour.

Fear has two pathways either to alert us to danger or lead us astray. Let’s be inspired to wake up, be alert and role model our faith in action to our children.  Children feel the energy you live out in your actions stronger than any words shared.  St Francis of Assisi names this too in simple terms, “Preach and where necessary use words.”

The Shortest Prayer

Over the last year many of our students have taken up Fr John’s invitation to bless themselves in the foyer of the church with holy water before school.  At our Beginning of Year Mass the children were reminded by Fr John that doing and saying the sign of the cross is the shortest prayer; a simple action that opens up a connection, an outward display of a relationship with God and possibly a conversation between you and God.  David in Year Two is always keen and looks forward to praying before school.  Last week he was greeted with a sign above the empty font stating, ‘NO HOLY WATER’- as per the request of the Archdiocese of Adelaide.  As you aware the government guidelines around indoor gatherings have meant all Masses have been suspended.  This has been another big change since taking the photo and has confirmed that  our world, our country and the city we’re living in are all experiencing a moment unlike any other.  Let’s be like David and continue to smile knowing we, the faithful, are carriers of hope during these confusing, frustrating and complex times. It is also an opportunity to wake up to the truth that the Church is and has always been the people, not the building.  This is actually our opportunity to tell the story of the cross and to proclaim the glory of the stone rolled away.

As people of faith, as people who love Jesus, one certainty is our prayer life continues with belief and confidence in its power.  Our prayer life gives us the strength to be carriers of hope for others.  May we really believe and discern that God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though earth give away and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea. Psalm 46:1-2.

God promises to hear the cries of his people when they call on Him. Be inspired to pray consistently.

Prayer in a Time of Need

I know Your hand is not at rest, nor your eyes, distracted, nor your voice, silent.  I know that with each breath, you are with me.  Each beat of my heart is your song; each morning, every evening, your gift.  But oh, my dear God, these are troubled days and I am prone to fear.  Please, in my fear, reveal to me verdant pastures; in my loneliness, go with me to still waters; in this struggle, restore my soul.  And if it is in shadow that I must walk, take my hand and do not let me go until there is no evil left to fear.  With your love, may I love; with your hope, may I hope, all the days of my life. Amen.
